Tom Gates is the main protagonist of the Tom Gates series. He is a boy with a (proclaimed by him) "annoying sister". He is the son of Frank Gates and Rita Gates. He also loves doodling a lot, and frequently doodles in school throughout the series since he finds many parts of daily school life boring. He likes playing tricks on Delia, eating Caramel wafers and many other biscuits, the latter shown in Biscuits, Bands, and Very Big Plans.

The Brilliant World of Tom Gates[]

Tom is moved to the front of the class so Mr Fullerman can keep his beady eyes on him. However, he still doodles behind Mr Fullerman's back in lessons. What's worse, he sits next to a annoying boy called Marcus Meldrew, who is always telling Mr Fullerman that he is doodling. Luckily, he also sits next to Amy Porter, who also dislikes Marcus. Although Tom keeps trying to be friends with her, it doesn't seem to be working. One day Tom and his family go on holiday. They go camping. Tom fell from a tree, breaking his arm. Mr Fullerman actually likes this story, and gives Tom 5 merits. Tom, along with his best friend, Derek, are in a band, but they can't decide what it should be called. Later, they agree on Dog Zombies. Before they agree on Dog Zombies, though, they ask Marcus. He simply laughs and said they can be called the "Loser Twins." Later, they find a strange bike and laugh at it. But Amy Porter is not laughing because it is her bike. She then goes and calls Tom an idiot (which is harsh.)Derek, being Tom's best friend, tries to cheer him up, but it doesn't work. What does cheer him up is his favourite biscuit, Caramel Wafers and he does the empty wrapper trick to Delia and it "works a treat." The next day, he does something very naughty. In Art, one of his favourite lessons, he has to do a self-portrait of himself. He does it and Mrs Worthington takes over. She compliments Tom and asks him to do another portrait, this time with more detail. Tom notices that she has a slightly furry top lip. So he does a drawing of her. Mrs Worthington sends his parents a detention slip.

Excellent Excuses[]

Tom returns as the protagonist, this time they are looking for a drummer for Dog Zombies (which is later revealed to be the hyperactive Norman Watson.)

Everything's Amazing[]

Tom returns as the protagonist.

Genius Ideas[]

Tom's idea of a perfect day would be having his own special desk, choosing whatever subject he wants, in art he gets to paint his favourite biscuits, Caramel Wafers, and in a really fun science experiment, Tom uses them like dominoes, and creates a world record. Later, they see Dude3 in a tour bus.

Trivia[]

  • He really likes to draw.
